Applications
-
Flat gears
Meshing gears on the same plane is one of the simplest ways of using them. In this creation, they mesh at right angles, too. You can also make a handle to turn the gears with an 18 mm tapping screw and a 12 mm spacer. This creation is a great way of experimenting with gear ratios and observing the direction in which gears rotate.
Main items required
・Universal Plate Set (2pcs.) (Item 70157)

Using with other components
Pairing the gears with the Universal Slider Set changes rotation into reciprocating motion. Rotation is four times faster, as power is transmitted from the 40T gear to a 10T gear, and if you use hex shafts and bushings, you can power this setup.

・Universal Slider Set (Item 70258)
・Universal Arm Set (Orange) (Item 70183)

Varying gear ratios
This creation’s gear ratio changes depending upon which way you turn the input shaft. The central 20T gear rotates and that controls whether the 10T gear meshes with the 40T or the 30T gear.
Main items required
・Universal Arm Set (Orange) (Item 70183)

Fan
The Universal Gear Set can be used in powered creations, too! This is a motor-powered fan, which has the bottom gears mesh at a right angle to transmit power via gears on the vertical universal arm. The fan blades are made from a paper cup, and the central 40T gear is affixed with a tapping screw.
Main items required
・Mini Motor Slim Gearbox (2-Speed) (Item 70245)
・R6/AA/UM3 Separated Battery Box w/Switch (Item 70150)
・Universal Arm Set (Orange) (Item 70183)
・Universal Plate Set (Item 70098)
・Paper cup

Link powered hand
Power for this robotic hand goes from a 10T gear underneath the gearbox and via a pair of 20T gears which are at the same angle but rotate in different directions. They in turn move the universal arms and the “fingers” open and close. Affixing arms to the gear holes lets you make link setups.
Main items required
・Universal Plate Set (Item 70098)
・Universal Arm Set (Item 70143)
・Universal Gearbox 2 (Item 70260)

Ratchet
This is a simple creation using an ordinary rubber band. When the gear rotates to the right, it moves the arms, but it freewheels when rotated the other way. The rubber band is used to push the arms onto the gear. This is another great example of how you can use this set to make models that illustrate how gears work.Main items required
・Universal Arm Set (Orange) (Item 70183)
・Universal Plate Set (Item 70098)
