1/35 SCALE 8t. SEMI-TRACK SD.KFZ. 7/2

As WWII progressed and German forces lost their air superiority amid fierce Allied raids in the sky, Germany looked to bolster ground to air defense with the development of self propelled anti-aircraft guns based upon tanks and half-track vehicles. The 8ton half-track (Sd.Kfz.7/2) was one of those such weapons. The half-track chassis employed had a proven track record towing 88mm guns, but was now fitted with its own 3.7cm anti-aircraft cannon that could fire 160 rounds per minute. Produced from 1943, later variants were also fitted with armor on the driver seat and radiator. About the Model ★This is a 1/35 scale plastic model assembly kit. Length: 200mm, width: 70mm. ★The functional form of the vehicle is accurately captured, including a realistic depiction of the complex half-track suspension. ★The model can be assembled with its tailgate in raised or lowered position. Plastic netting is also included to raise realism. ★The 3.7cm anti-aircraft cannon features excellent attention to detail, right down to the breech and mount. ★Includes explosive and armor piercing shell parts.

1/35 GERMAN 18 TON HEAVY HALF-TRACK "FAMO"

Triple "Famos" towing When a tank became inoperative, the Recovery Platoons were informed of the condition of both the tank and the surrounding road surface. Tanks such as Pz.Kpfw.III and Pz.Kpfw.IV could be towed by a single 18 ton heavy half-track, but heavy tanks such as the Tiger I or Panther required three or more towing vehicles. In that case, about 5 meters of wire rope was used to link each of the half-tracks together. Except for emergency situations, a draw-bar was used for the tank/half-track linkage instead of wire rope. After the linkage was complete, a commander and signalman boarded the lead half-track, directing the other half-tracks by a series of hand signals. (The 1/35 scale scene shown measures about 120cm in length.) About the "Famo" In the wake of Blitzkrieg advances made by the Wehrmacht at the outbreak of WWII, the recovery of damaged or broken tanks from the battlefield proved relatively simple. After securing an area, reinforcing divisions could easily send inoperative vehicles back to the homeland for repair via railway. However, in the seesaw battles with the British Army in North Africa and against the Russian Army on the Russian front, the quick replenishment of tank strength became an indispensable element of Wehrmacht battle strategy. The utilization of the 18 ton Heavy Half-Track "Famo" proved fundamental to this strategy. The proposal for the development of the Wehrmacht half-tracks was first made in 1932. Originally, three half-tracks, designated by their towing capability (5 ton, 8 ton and 12 ton) were designed, until 1936, when a light 3 ton vehicle and a heavy 18 ton vehicle, the largest one in the Wehrmacht, were also added. The 18 ton half track was mainly developed for the towing of 21cm and 24cm artillery howitzer and of course for tank recovery. It could also be used for the transport of over 30 troops. 1/35 GERMAN 18 TON HEAVY HALF-TRACK "FAMO" and TANK TRANSPORTER Sd.Ah.116

How Tanks Were Loaded The trailer of the Tank Transporter Sd.Ah.116 was suspended between two bogies, the rear of which was equipped with a separate steering mechanism. This model offers a great insight into the construction and operation of German's giant beast-of-burden. About the German 18 Ton Heavy Half-Track Famo and Tank Transporter Sd.Ah.116 As World War II progressed, the vehicles used on the battlefields became larger and larger. When these mammoth machines broke down or became damaged, the task of bringing them back from the front lines was not an easy one. This need was especially felt by the German Wehrmacht, who were fighting on a wide range of battlegrounds: from the scorching desert of North Africa to the railroad-less plains of Russia. Bringing damaged vehicles back from these difficult conditions was indispensable to replenishing fighting strength. The German 18 Ton Heavy Half-Track "FAMO" and Tank Transporter Sd.Ah.116 was one of the vehicles that contributed to this task. Including all variations, over 2,500 18ton half-tracks were produced by the end of the WWII. One of the major types was the tank recovery half-track, which was a mighty towing vehicle equipped with two rows of seats and a flatbed in back for the storage of equipment such as a draw-bar and spare wire rope. Tool storage compartments were found on each of the outer sides of the flatbed. In addition, the underside of a vehicle was equipped with a winch. Its powerplant was a Maybach HL 108 12-cylinder engine, which put out 270hp. Tank transporting was conducted by either direct towing with a draw bar, or by loading the tank atop a massive trailer. Officially known as "Sd.Ah.116", the Type 116 Trailer connected with the 18ton heavy half track, which allowed for the transportation of 22-23 ton class tanks such as the Pz.Kpfw.III, Pz.Kpfw.IV and other heavy artillery. About the Model ★After the impressive debut of the FAMO kit, Tamiya began to receive many requests for variations. Among the several types of FAMO to appear during WWII, the most frequently requested was the Sd.Ah.116 trailer-towing version. ★Stretching over 640mm, Tamiya's new beast-of-burden is 50mm longer than the Dragon Wagon and is the longest kit in the MM series. ★The massive trailer unit consists of both the front and the rear wheeled pieces on either ends of the long platform piece. ★Real rubber tires for heightened realism. ★This kit features ample metal and metal plated parts for various accessory pieces such as a chain for fixing the tank in tow to the platform. ★This kit brings back the eight figures of four poses included in the original "FAMO" kit, plus four all-new figures of three poses acting out a tank loading scene at the rear of the trailer.
