Educational Construction Series (Units) No.272

DIFFERENTIAL GEAR UNIT

Differential gears are a common feature in full-size vehicles and Tamiya R/C models, allowing smooth cornering by balancing inner and outer wheel rotation speed during cornering. The transparent case lets you check how inner bevel gears mesh and work together while metal 3mm hex shafts transmit power. This unit can be combined with separately sold Universal Plates and Universal Arms in the Tamiya Educational Construction Series.

★Includes a transparent case, low-friction gears, hex shafts (50mm x3), screws and grease. ★Gear ratio = 3.17:1

Differential gears

  • Turning the input shaft sees both output shafts rotate in the same direction.

  • Stop one of the output shafts from rotating and the other speeds up.

Construction ideas

  • South-pointing chariot: the stick points the same direction regardless of the vehicle direction.

  • Electric car: rotation speed of its driving wheels is balanced by a differential gear which allows smooth cornering like a full-size vehicle.

  • As a vehicle turns, the differential gear balances the difference in speed between the inner and outer wheels for smooth cornering.
