1/35 Military Miniature Series No.224

1/35 SCALE GERMAN SCHWIMMWAGEN TYPE 166

Length: 113 mm. Image shows painted and assembled kit.

With a name that translates rather literally as “swimming vehicle”, it comes as little surprise that the trusty Schwimmwagen Type 166 was an amphibious vehicle. It was based upon the Kübelwagen Type 82 off-road car and featured a water-tight pressed metal hull/body, plus four-wheel drive. Using the same air-cooled horizontally opposed 4-cylinder engine as the Kubelwagen, it could make 80 km/h on land and – using its three-bladed screw – 10 km/h in the water; it also had an extra low gear for use in disengaging from poor terrain. Around 14,000 were manufactured between 1942 and 1944, and they were employed in a range of environments and missions.
