With a name in German that roughly translates to “car with bucket seats”, the Kübelwagen Type 82 design was based upon the Volkswagen and would go on to serve the Wehrmacht in a number of capacities. Lightweight – it weighed in at just 700 kg – it was built around a monocoque with a 23.5 hp four-cylinder engine in the rear, and a torsion bar suspension setup; the Kübelwagen was right at home on off-road surfaces. More than 50,000 were produced between 1938 and 1945, with upgrades to the engine and more, and saw action with all branches of the German military.
