A Desert Eight-Eight
On May 26, 1942, Field Marshal Rommel's Africa Corps launched an attack against the British defensive line west of Tobruk which stretched from Gazala to Bir Hacheim. As they advanced, they encountered a British unit equipped with the latest M3 Grant tanks which threatened to halt the offensive. The Africa Corps was saved when the 88mm guns of the Luftwaffe's anti-aircraft units swung into action. Their accurate long-range fire forced the British tanks to retreat, allowing the Africa Corps to continue their advance and eventually capture Tobruk on June 21st.
