| Setting the Tone The Team Lotus Type 49 featured its Ford Cosworth DFV engine as a stressed member, a layout which revolutionized Formula 1. The 49B evolution debuted in the third race of the 1968 season, featuring downforce-improving revisions such as a front wing and wedge-shaped engine cowling. From the sixth race, a high rear wing was added in place of the engine cowling; its stay was affixed directly to the rear uprights with the intention of providing the downforce straight to the rear wheels. That year, famed driver G.Hill took 3 victories on his way to the Drivers' Championship, while Team Lotus also picked up the Constructors' crown. Perhaps equally as importantly, the car also ushered in the era of sponsor-colored cars, and the phasing out of the previous norm of national colors. |
