FAIREY SWORDFISH Mk.I

The "Stringbag" Touches Down in Tokyo!!
Although the Swordfish Mk.1 was Tamiya's first attempt at a 1/48 scale biplane, the aircraft known as the "Stringbag" proved to be a tremendous success at the Tokyo Hobby Show (Oct 7th-10th). From the cloth-covered fuselage to the manned cockpit, the incredible detail of the actual Swordfish has been authentically captured in 1/48 scale. We are proud to present some of the detailed images of this acclaimed British fighter-bomber, as it was displayed at The Tokyo Hobby Show.

About the Fairey Swordfish Mk. 1
The Swordfish was constructed with a two-level main wing and a fixed landing gear. Its fuselage and wings consisted of steel pipe frames covered in cloth. The power plant of the Swordfish, an air-cooled Bristol Pegasus radial engine produced 690hp, giving a top speed of only 220km/h. However, thanks to its winning maneuverability and ability to carry heavy weapons, not to mention the superb control of many courageous pilots, it later contributed to the downing of the German battleship Bismark and at least ten U-boats. The Swordfish continued to fly at the front lines of combat until the end of the war.
