【 The First Japanese-made Le Mans Car 】 In 1991, the Mazda 787B became the first Japanese car, and first non-piston engine car to win the 24hr Le Mans race. The car's powerful 700hp 4-rotor R26B rotary engine had such state-of-the-art features as variable-valves, triple plug ignition, and parallel port injection. Mazda entered 3 of these cars in the race, and car No.55 was driven by the team of Volker Weidler, Bertrand Gachot, and Johnny Herbert. Starting from 19th place on the grid, this 787B fought its way up, overcoming perennial contenders Porsche, Mercedes-Benz, Peugeot, and the 1990 champion Jaguar XJR12 to complete a record 4,923km and take the win.
