1/35 Military Miniature Series No.325

German Heavy Tank Destroyer Elefant
Item No:35325

Length=236mm Image shows assembled and painted model. ※Enlarged Image

【 Elefant Defense 】 The German heavy tank destroyer Elefant was armed with a powerful 8.8cm L/71 gun which could knock out T-34 tanks at a distance of 2,000m, protected by armor up to 200mm thick, and equipped with advanced features such as a hybrid drivetrain. It had its roots in the Porsche-designed Ferdinand, which was first deployed into combat during the Battle of Kursk in 1943. The lessons learned from that battle resulted in modifications including the addition of a commander's cupola, a machine gun for infantry defense, and better tracks and the enhanced vehicle received the new designation Elefant in February 1944. Elefants were deployed to Italy and the Eastern Front, where they continued to defend against Allied forces until the final skirmishes of the war.

■Reproducing Zimmerit Coating
During the latter half of WWII, Zimmerit was applied to German tanks to help prevent magnetic mines from sticking to their hulls. It is known that every example of the Elefant had Zimmerit applied. Coating pattern and application of Zimmerit varied according to the vehicle and chipped off sections were also seen. Adding Zimmerit will enhance the realism of the model.

●Easy Realism! Zimmerit Coating Sheet for 1/35 Scale Elefant (Item 12644)
Simply cut out these textured stickers and apply them to the model to recreate the Elefent's Zimmerit coating. Set enables depiction of two different coating patterns.

■Stickers' outlines are printed.

■Cut stickers from the sheet using a sharp modeling knife.

■Radial patterns on the frontal armor are also reproduced.

●Polyester Putty (Item 87097) & 1/35 Scale Zimmerit Coating Applicator (Item 35187)
An even more realistic Zimmerit coating can be achieved by using polyester putty and the applicator set. *The finished model shown in the images on this page features Zimmerit recreated with this method.

■The applicator set includes photo-etched applicators in four different widths (0.7mm width was used to recreate Elefant's Zimmerit).

■A spatula and Tamiya Mini Razor Saw handle (Item 74018) will also come in handy.

■Practice on a plastic plate. Apply masking tape where coating is not needed.

■Apply a thin layer polyester putty using a spatula.

■Apply coating pattern with the applicator before putty dries.

■Remove masking and allow the putty to dry.

■Alter direction of the applicator to reproduce different patterns.

■Use tip of screwdriver (-) to reproduce radial patterns.

■Recreating chipped off sections and irregular patterns will further enhance the realism of the model.

■Tamiya Craft Tools required for assembling the model.
