 About the Japan Ground Self
Defense ForceAlthough the constitution of Japan prohibits the nation from maintaining military forces or leading a war to settle international disputes, it was argued that maintaining a force only for self-defense would not contradict the constitution. The Self Defense Force was established in 1954 and is divided into three branches: Ground Self Defense Force, Maritime Self Defense Force, and Air Self Defense Force. The central role of the GSDF is the prevention of external aggression against Japan, and in the case of an invasion, to repel such aggression, thereby preserving national peace and security. Furthermore, the GSDF plays major roles in the domestic security and response to large-scale natural disasters. |

 For Diorama Excellence...The Type 90 Tank mounts a 120mm smoothbore main gun equipped with a precise fire control system. This sophisticated unit consists of a trajectory computer, YAG (Yitrium Aluminum Garnet) laser beam range finder and gun stabilizer, enabling accurate firing while on the move. The loading of the ammunition to that system falls on the skilled hands the Ammo-Loading Crew of the JGSDF. Tamiya has recreated two of these crewmen in stunning detail, loading 120mm HEAT-MP ammunition from special wooden boxes, to the loading chamber of the tank. The figures, ammunition, and boxes all boast outstanding detail, and inspire the creation of a truly realistic diorama. |

After the Type 61 and Type 74, the Type 90
is the third generation mainstay tank for Japan's Ground Self Defense
Force, and first underwent deployment to the JGSDF in 1991. This modern
war machine is protected with compound armor plating and equipped with
advanced sighting mechanics, smoke dischargers, and various other high-tech
goodies. The
Type 90 is also equipped with an automatic loading device, which injects
ammunition one shot at a time from the loading chamber to main gun. That
unique loading chamber has been authentically recreated on Tamiya's 1/35
version of the tank, offering an educational insight into the inner workings
of a world-class fighting machine. |
